FDCC Competition Rules
League System season 2017/2018 onwards
All genre of image is acceptable up to and including ‘Art Nude’.
Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of object via light sensitivity) made by the entrant. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his/her own.
This can include but not limited to:- Landscape, Portrait, Nature, Wildlife, Macro, Abstract, Still Life, Creative Images. (This is where an image has been altered, either electronically or otherwise, by the entrant and artwork or computer graphics created by them may be incorporated provided the photographic content predominates.)
Images that are considered to be offensive or pornographic will be removed from the competitions before being shown.
Any image that shows Copyright, Watermark or Photographer’s name will be excluded.
Monochrome (Black and White) photographs:
A black and white image containing various shades of grey from black to white is considered to be monochrome. A black & white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a monochrome work able to stand in the black & white category.
However a black and white work modified by partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) and will be excluded or disqualified from the Monochrome section.
All images other than those above are defined as colour images. A black and white image which has been modified by the addition of partial toning or by the addition of one colour to any part of the image is a Colour image
Street photography is photography conducted for art or enquiry that features unmediated chance encounters and random incidents within public places. Street photography can focus on people and their behaviour in public.
Street photography does not necessitate the presence of a street or even the urban environment, though people usually feature directly, street photography might be absent of people and can be of an object or environment where the image projects a decidedly human character in facsimile or aesthetic In this respect the street photographer is similar to social documentary photographers or photojournalists who also work in public places, but with the aim of capturing newsworthy events;
A Print of any Size up to a maximum size of 50cm x 40cm (19.68″ x 15.74″) will be accepted BUT all prints must be mounted in or on a standard size 50cm x 40cm. (19.68″ x 15.74″), maximum 4 mm thickness mount with compulsory 50cm x 40cm full back board. No abrasive / sticky material e.g. Velcro / Sellotape / Masking Tape is to be visible on the rear of the mount. Prints must be capable of being stored with other work without causing damage due to poor mounting. Failure to satisfactorily mount prints may result in their exclusion.
Where an improperly mounted print in Division 1 and Division 2 is submitted it will be excluded. For a member in Division 3, the member will be given 2 warnings after which any print that does not comply with the rules will be excluded.
This requirement is to allow any image submitted for a competition to be included in battles with other clubs or submitted for consideration in KCPA exhibitions / competitions (obviously with the author’s permission), prints that fall outside these acceptable parameters will be excluded from selection.
Digital Projected Images (DPI)
Maximum image width is 1400 pixels. Maximum image height (vertical) is 1050 pixels. Smaller images are acceptable but will not necessarily be displayed at their best.
Save your file in the JPG format, using the sRGB colour space is recommended as this will provide better quality under the projection conditions used for judging the competition as the projector is designed to work with the sRGB colour space.
If you do save your images in any other format your image may not display the way you wanted or expected it to – it may lose colour or detail or both.
The projector only displays colours which are visible in sRGB. If you use a larger colour space (such as Adobe 1998 or ProPhoto), the colours will be squeezed down to fit the sRGB colour space.
The Competitions will be run on a Leagues basis similar to a football League. There will be two Leagues, one for prints and the other for DPI. Each of these Leagues will consist of 3 divisions; Division 1, 2 and 3, Division 1 and 2 will each comprise 10 members, with the balance of members who enter competitions being placed in Division 3.
As there is a separate League for both Print and DPI, members may find that they are in different Divisions for these 2 competition types.
Division 1 is for the more advanced members, the Division 2 is for the intermediate members and less skilled members. Division 3 will hold all the remaining members who enter competitions but may not consistently enter competitions.
The points awarded to each member will be those given by the Judge(s) for each of the 4 monthly competitions, there will be no adjustment to an end of year score for a member who may miss a competition. Only the scores awarded by a Judge will be aggregated together to provide the total.
At the end of the season the bottom 2 from Division 1 and Division 2 will be demoted to the lower Division and the top 2 from Division 2 and Division 3 will be promoted to the higher Division, again based on the maximum scores awarded to the individual during the 4 monthly competitions.
The committee will decide any ties.
If a member in Division 1 or Division 2 leaves the club their place will be filled
from the lower Division.
If a new member joins the club with sufficient accreditations they will be placed into Division 1
or Division 2 depending on their Accreditations, based on agreement from the FDCC Committee, otherwise all new members joining the club will be placed into Division 3 and will be promoted on merit.
The splitting of the groups is to try and help provide a more even level of judging and help members grow in their skills whilst being compared to their peers.
Each member is allowed to enter a maximum of 2 images (or panels where applicable) into ALL of the monthly competitions and Panel Cup.
How the League works
Initially for the 2015/2016 season the scores achieved by all members who participated in competitions have been combined, regardless of A or B group and the highest 10 overall scoring members have been placed in Division 1, the next 10 highest scores have been placed in Division 2, everyone else falls into Division 3.
It is anticipated that the League system will work on a similar basis to that used in the Football League in as much as there will be promotions from lower leagues and demotion from higher leagues.
Promotions and Demotions will only occur once in a year and that will be after the last of the Monthly Competitions has been concluded.
The initial number for promotion and demotion is 2. i.e. at the end of the season the people who have scored the lowest in Division 1 will be demoted into Division 2 likewise the top 2 scoring people in Division 2 will be promoted to Division 1. The same will apply to Divisions 2 and 3.
It is felt that with people joining and leaving the club there may well be instances where more than 2 people could be promoted at the end of the year due to someone in one of the higher Divisions leaving the club.
Similarly if there was a situation where, say 3, people in one of the top Divisions didn’t enter all 4 competitions and they had no real reason, such as illness or death in the family, for not entering and had
simply decided that they wanted to miss a competition the Executive Committee could take the decision that these members all be demoted and the number of people promoted would be increased to maintain the required number in the Division. If however one or more of these people did have a genuine and significant reason for not entering and would typically have been above the drop-zone this individual would be given a waiver for the season.
New members would automatically be placed in the Division 3 unless they had a very good and proven record at a previous club in which case the Executive Committee would consider placing them in one of the promotion places but this would be the exception rather than the rule.
The intention is to try and promote a more even competition for members within the club and hopefully encourage more people to participate in competitions which it is hoped would improve the overall standard of photography within the club.
If, after a period of season, it is found that having only 10 members in each of the two top Divisions is insufficient for a competitive number of entries, the Committee may decide to increase the number of members in the Division so as to provide a consistent standard for that Division.
Monthly Print Competition
For all Divisions there will be 4 monthly print competitions which are Open i.e. no set subject, colour or monochrome.
An image may be entered twice, once in Print form, once as a DPI.
All prints must be recorded on the appropriate entry sheet in the club hall by no later than 19:45 on the evening of the competition. Images submitted after this time may be excluded.
Each print must contain the FDCC Members number, Members Name and the image Title on the back of the print / mount, preferably by completing and sticking the FDCC supplied competition label to the top right hand corner of the back of the mount. There are to be no names, titles or copyright notices on the front of any print / mount. The image Title Label will be used to determine the orientation for the image and will be displayed on the print stand for judging in this way.
Monthly DPI Competition
For all Divisions there will be 4 monthly DPI competitions which are Open i.e. no set subject, colour or monochrome.
An image may be entered twice, once in Print form, once as a DPI
All images need to be emailed to [email protected] by no later than Midnight on the Tuesday 8 days before the DPI Competition. Each entrant will receive an email confirmation that their image(s) have been received. If for any reason the entrant has NOT received a confirmation email by the midday of the Wednesday 7 days before the DPI competition it is the responsibility of the entrant to contact the FDCC Competition Secretary and agree how their entry can be passed to the Competitions Secretary for inclusion in the following week’s completion.
In the unlikely event that an individual has difficulty in getting their entry to the Competitions Secretary provided they have formally notified the Competitions Secretary of the problem, either by, email, phone of
in person by the close of the FDCC Club meeting the week prior to the competition, an extension for receipt of the missing entry will be granted until Noon of the Saturday prior to the DPI competition.
This extension is ONLY for those individuals who have attempted to submit an entry and experienced problems and who have formally notified the Competitions Secretary of their issues.
Files MUST have the following naming format Entrant Name#Division#Image Title i.e. Joe Bloggs#1#Sunrise over Thanet
Please do not put .jpg on the end of the file name, the computer operating system will do this when you save the file. There is no need to put a _ or – between words and both upper and lowercase characters are accepted.
Entries that are received after the closing time, with the wrong naming format or larger than the allowed image size may be excluded.
Please note it is not the responsibility of the FDCC Committee to advise or chase individuals that their entry may not have been received; it is the responsibility of each club member to ensure that their images for any DPI competition are correctly labelled and submitted by the competition deadline.
Colour Panel Cup
This is a competition where all Divisions compete together, the panel must consist of 6 (six) Prints which are displayed all at the same time. A minimum Print Size 8″x 6″ (20.32cm x15.24cm) will be accepted and a mount size 50cm x 40cm. (19.68″ x 15.74″) and maximum 4mm thick must be used, prints that fall outside these acceptable parameters may be excluded.
The entrant dictates how the images are to be ordered when being displayed so as to achieve the best balance and impact of their panel. This is typically two rows of three images positioned one above the other.
Some of the Images for the Panel Cup may have been shown in monthly competitions during the year, however there must be at least 50% new images in the panel which have not been shown in Monthly competitions
Peter Hedgeland AIIP FRPS Trophy Cup
This is a competition where all Divisions compete together, the panel must consist 6 DPI images which are displayed all at the same time or projected immediately one after the other. The entrant must offer an optional commentary or description to accompany the display of the panel.
The entrant dictates how the images are to be ordered when being displayed so as to achieve the best balance and impact of their panel
Some of the Images for the Peter Hedges Cup may have been shown in monthly competitions during the year, however there must be at least 50% new images in the panel which have not been shown in Monthly competitions
Street Photography Cup
This is a competition where all Divisions compete together. As the name suggests this competition is open only for all aspects of ‘Street Photography’. Entries will be in print format and may be either colour or monochrome.
Print Size 8″x 6″ (20.32cm x15.24cm) will be accepted and a mount size 50cm x 40cm. (19.68″ x 15.74″) and maximum 4mm thick must be used, prints that fall outside these acceptable parameters may be excluded.
End of Year competitions
The End of Year competitions will be open to those people in all Divisions, Members do not have to have entered images in monthly competitions, to participate in the annual competitions
Entries for annual competitions must have been taken in the last year. It is permissible to enter images into the end of year annual competitions which have been judged in Monthly Competitions.
Advice on creating a Panel
Images within a panel must work together as a set, they can tell a story, be images based on a single theme, be of the same item taken in different seasons for example, or a model in different outfits or in varying locations.
The images have to have a relationship in some way to all the others. It is important to remember that all images are ‘stand-alone’, ie they must not all be printed onto one sheet of paper.
Many things need to be considered when working on a panel, the following are items for consideration;
- Relationship of the images
- Do the images work together?
- Is the exposure similar across all the images (or massively different)
- Are images all printed on the same paper type
- Has any post processing ‘style’, ‘plug-in’ been applied to all the images?
- Are they all mounted in the same format (borders/mount colour/window/flush etc.)
- Diagonals work better pointing into the center of the panel
- Portraits work better facing into the panel
- Use heavier (darker) images at the base, and obviously lighter images at the top.
- Try vignetting the very outside corners of each image (e.g. the top right corner on the top right image, bottom left corner of the bottom left image etc.)
- Don’t have images that are too similar, even when working on a common theme / style there needs to be differences in the images.
- Landscape and Portrait formats can be mixed but the Panel needs to be balanced
- The use of leading lines, diagonals etc. helps to keep the interest within the panel and to prevent the viewer’s eye wandering off at a tangent
- Consider flipping/rotating images during processing to get angles/faces pointing the right way, use all the tools you have in your box to help achieve impact and balance
- Keep images the same size if possible, it’s easier to view in this way
These are just guidelines, not rules, and are meant to be broken should the panel improve by doing it.
The following are three examples of what can form a panel, these are provided as examples only, the individual entrant must decide what for them constitutes a balanced and well-structured panel
The same print or projected image may only be entered in ONE monthly competition either a print or DPI competition, the same image can then only be entered once more in a monthly competition but it must be entered in a different medium i.e. if the image was initially used as a print it can only be used once more in monthly competitions but as a DPI
